h "American Harmony" - This Weekend at All Saints!!

Filmmaker Aengus James sympathetically captures the thrills of victory and the agony of defeat at the International Championships of Barbershop Singing in "American Harmony," an efficiently constructed, emotionally involving, and pleasing documentary.

Early scenes hit the right note of bemused curiosity as James takes viewers into the world of barbershop quartet competitions, a realm where much-awarded champs are treated like royalty – a veteran of three different prize-winning ensembles is referred to, respectfully, as "Awesome Joe" Connelly – and even the jolliest of jokers admit to the intensity of their dedication to performing. Without musical accompaniment, they sing songs ranging from Broadway show tunes to ‘50s doo-wop classics to standards retrofitted with semisatirical lyrics. But even when they’re playing for laughs, there’s no mistaking that they’re also playing for keeps. "Look at us," says one of four singers bedecked in what appear to be orange hazmat suits and Mexican wrestlers’ masks. "Does this look like it’s a casual hobby?"

l Coming March 19/20 - "Lolita" and "Paths of Glory" - Stanley Kubrick Film Festival

The Florida State University's Student Life Cinema (SLC) at the Askew Student Life Center presents the Stanley Kubrick Film Festival, March 19-26, 2010.

This festival will highlight the works of the iconic director and will include guest panelists: director/producer Jan Harlan, actor/director Vincent D'Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket). On Friday, March 26, 2010, the SLC will have both Mr. Harlan and Mr. D’Onofrio for a Q&A session after the screening of Full Metal Jacket.

Mr. Harlan was the executive producer of all Kubrick films from Barry Lyndon (1980) until Eyes Wide Shut (1999). As both Kubrick’s producer and brother-in-law, he has an unparalleled perspective on Kubrick as both an artist and a family member. He was also the executive producer of the Kubrick project, Artificial Intelligence: A.I., with director Steven Spielberg.

TFS is proud to partner with the Student Life Cinema in presenting two Stanley Kubrick films at All Saints Cinema. On Friday, March 19, TFS will present "Paths of Glory" starring Kirk Douglas. On Saturday, March 20, TFS will show "Lolita" featuring Peter Sellers. Both titles will be shown one time.
