"They Came to Play" - This Weekend at All Saints!
A must for music lovers, "They Came to Play" documents the Fifth International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs, sponsored by the Van Cliburn Foundation. Players from all over the world, ranging from self-taught to classically trained, aged 35 to almost 80, convene in Fort Worth, Texas, for a week of intense competition, music, and camaraderie.
With humor and drama, it portrays several multitalented amateur pianists as they strive to balance their work, home and musical lives. Many of them have overcome extraordinary challenges – like
drug addiction, AIDS, heartbreak, or political asylum – and they all share an overwhelming need to express themselves, musically and otherwise. Their intense preparation comes to a climax during the week-long competition, when they perform in front of a professional jury and discerning audience, in three highly competitive elimination rounds.
"They Came to Play" is to music what "Spellbound" is to spelling bees. The film won the Audience Award for Documentary at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival. (2008. Not Rated. 91 minutes.)
