Owls in the Neighborhood

A wild family of barred owls (Strix varia) has taken up residence on the property and made their presence known, to mixed reviews.  The spotted owls and falcons, whose area seems to be at the core of the owls' range, are very vocally opposed; the staff, volunteers, and visitors are fascinated; and our great horned owl, and her handlers, who have borne the brunt of the male barred owl's protective assaults are not amused.  The young are now out of the nest and can sometimes be found on the lawn perches, along with the male adult; the female is much more shy.  This has been an amazing opportunity to observe an owl family ...

Earth Day Events

Earth Day (April 22nd each year) has great significance to many of us in the conservation field - especially those of us who have been around since the first one in 1970!  It has also been CRC's opportunity each year to share with the wider community the wonder of the natural world and have a fun time doing it.  What a great excuse for a party!  This year's Earth Day Celebration was our 14th annual event .  Thanks to everyone who came and all those who worked so hard putting it on.

Pony Gilbert Expanded Board of Directors

Cascades Raptor Center has been working on strengthening its infrastructure in order to be better positioned for the growth and changes we envision in the years ahead.  Our Board of Directors is key to that.

Easy Ways to Support the Cause

In these uncertain economic times, we know that every dollar counts.  That's certainly very true for us and obviously for our supporters.  There are a number of ways that we can benefit from purchases that you make - without adding to your cost at all.

Help Us Plan Our Future & WIN a Release!

Cascades Raptor Center is growing and growing ... we have big plans, as most of you know, to grow some more and create a world-class nature center as an educational resource and economic asset for our community - and the birds.  We are in the strategic planning process - plotting our route to get from ‘here’ to ‘there’ and you can help!  Please watch for a Survey Monkey email in the next few weeks, which will be asking for your thoughts and observations to help us chart our course.  We will also be sending a written survey to people on our mailing list for whom we do not have an email. Randomly selected participants will win t-shirts, guest passes, or the opportunity to release a raptor!  THANK YOU in advance for your thoughtful contributions!

Volunteer Profile

With only three paid staff members, our volunteers mean everything to CRC.  And do everything!  Loy Maierhauser is a perfect example.

Volunteer Support Team

We have created a group of volunteers whose mission is to help us raise funds and friends for the birds in our care - and we could use more help!  Currently, most of the Volunteer Support Team (VST) are animal care or education volunteers who already provide countless hours of hands-on support to the Center (we’ve had well over 8000 hours contributed already this year by volunteers in all aspects of what we do).  We’d be delighted to welcome new VST members who love what we do, but don’t want to get in there and cut up food or scrub out cages ...  If you are interested in finding out more, please contact Laurin at Laurin@eRaptors.org or 541/485-1320.  Thank you!
