WE NEED YOUR ADDRESS - sound familiar?

I know that I am not alone. I've had a couple of such pleas from various companies in the last few months, so I don't feel so bad about asking for your mailing address. Any left over guilt I'll wash away with tequila at the Auntie fundraiser on Monday. (what was that I said about tequila? see next article for details...)

Just to be clear - WE NEED YOUR ADDRESS EVEN IF YOU THINK WE HAVE IT, WE PROBABLY DON'T - THERE WAS AN INCIDENT, WE WON'T TALK ABOUT THAT, JUST... um...PLEASE..., basically, we are starting from scratch.

And hey! You can be sure that we won't be mailing you much stuff, we really aren't into the mass mailout thing. But once (maybe twice) a year, we want to send you exciting information - like about Free Fall, the rest of our season and a sneak preview of 2008/2009, a request for donations, that kind of thing...

BUT THE GOOD NEWS is --- we have help!!! Perhaps you've already heard a lovely message from our New Zealander assistant, Pamela Hooper? Well, we are thankful to have her helping us out over the next couple of months until this whole Free Fall thing is wrapped up.

Meanwhile, be a sweatheart and save her a phone call by emailing your address at: pamela@theatrecentre.org

THANK YOU!!

FREE FALL - Festival Passes still available - get them now!! $60

Free Fall passes on sale now for $60. (good for 6 shows and the 3 day Culture Congress forum)

THIS MONTH IN THE SPACE: Hrant Allianak's A CROOKED MAN opens February 22

(cough) So maybe you've already read about this on The Theatre Centre blog two weeks ago... but just in case - don't miss out on this exciting new production by Alianak Theatre Productions!

A Crooked Man

by Richard Kalinoski, directed by Hrant Alianak

Starring Hrant Alianak, Araxi Arslanian, Garen Boyajian, Carlo Essagian and Michael Kazarian, Set and Lighting Design by Droege Designs, Costume Design by Anne Dixon, Sound Design by Terry Crack and Joe Mancuso

Friday February 22, 2008 at 8pm The Theatre Centre, 1087 Queen Street West (entrance on Dovercourt)

An aspiring journalist chooses his grandfather Hagop as the subject for an innocuous newspaper article. As Hagop narrates his experiences of the Armenian genocide during World War I, Alex uncovers layers of emotion as the old man finally confronts his demons and reveals not only the awful details of his past, but, for the very first time ever, a terrible secret that has consumed his whole life.

Inspired by a true story, A Crooked Man offers no easy answers to the issues of guilt and innocence. Sprinkled with a familiar relational humour, it touches the heart with its mirror on an anguished soul and its graceful and moving story.

As well as producing and directing A Crooked Man, Hrant Alianak portrays the 88-year-old Hagop. This is the second play on the theme of the 1915 Armenian genocide by American playwright Richard Kalinoski, author of the internationally acclaimed Beast on the Moon.

THIS MONTH IN THE SPACE: Wavelength 400 - Saturday Feb. 16

Have you seen those snappy posters? Wavelength 400 continues to rule the Valentine's Day weekend.

Saturday Feb. 16 Wavelength 400: Night Three (In Association with The Theatre Centre)

The Wavelength music series has been tying together the loose threads of Toronto’s various underground music scenes into a semi-coherent yet always entertaining weekly forum since the year 2000. Its anniversary parties have become an annual tradition each February, and this year Wavelength celebrates its eighth birthday (and 400th show) with 18 different performances at four different venues over four nights. Saturday night (Feb. 16) Wavelength makes its first collaboration with the Theatre Centre, to recontextualize rock’n’roll outside the performer/audience-divided bar scene, and into a boundary-less space for participation and collective effervescence — with the best sightlines in town.

The line-up features five of Canada’s most rigorously dynamic, rhythmically locomotive avant-rock groups:

soul-punk duo Lullabye Arkestra (pictured), psych-rockers DD/MM/YYYY, Mississauga hardcore upstarts Dance Electric, Montreal electro-pop crew Telefauna, and Toronto dance-punkers Femme Generation,

with music between bands spun by DJ Dan Vila.

General Chaos Visuals brings his trademark psychedelic projections, and Spencer Butt will be your host. Wear comfortable shoes, and get there early. Doors 8pm (1am curfew), admission: pay what you can (suggested $10).

THIS MONTH IN THE SPACE: Battle of the Sexes - Hip Hop Dance Off - Friday Feb 15

The Theatre Centre is getting known for its bboying... check out this new event from Thoa Ho...

BATTLE OF THE SEXES aim is to eliminate the double standard within the hip hop community through the means of 4 exhibition battles where a female break dancer known as a B-girl battles a male break-dancer also know as a B-boy in a 5 round showcase. All dancers that have been hired to battle have earned their reputation through means of battle, performance, as choreographer or an instructor. An objective of the event is to showcase female talent in a predominately male dominated community while showcasing them on an equal platform. For example, many events that showcase female artists are geared towards a female audience only which limits the opportunity to show their skills to a wider set audience. This event will also educate the audience of female involvement and contribute to hip hop culture. Through the means of the exhibition battles the event hopes to eliminate the "easy props" notion, that it is acceptable for women to receive praise when their skills are mediocre because they are "trying" to break dance (MC, DJ, Graff etc). The event will also include a 2 on 2 battle which is open to anyone i.e. male, female young or old. This is a community based event, as many local artists are invited to sell their art as well the businesses who have been asked to contribute/sponsor this event are local businesses.

FREE FALL - Clark & I -- coming to Toronto, here's the hype from PUSH !!

We just got an email today that word has spread to New York that Clark & I is one hot show!

Here's a little bit of a review from a great PuSh initiative: "RealTime Reviews Live on the Net". RealTime is Australia's largest arts magazine, focusing on hybrid practices in contemporary performance, dance, music, sound art, film and visual and media arts. During the PuSh Festival, RealTime’s editors will conduct an intensive 10-day workshop on reviewing contemporary art practices.

CLARK AND I SOMEWHERE IN CONNETICUT tells an entire family history through photographs. But what sticks is the visceral image (spoken not shown) of a Japanese man @@@@@@@@@@ a @@@@@@ woman (the other most repeated, and true, anecdote) and the @@@@@@@ experience of hearing how @@@@@@@@ dies. It’s a fascinating reversal of how we usually @@@@@@@ @@@@ @@@@ authority when it comes to @@@@@ @@@@ pictures. If we’re willing to make that shift, maybe we’re also willing to consider whether story ownership is determined by who cares about it most—who digests it, who makes it theirs emotionally and physically. Or maybe we’re not willing, because we feel protective of our @@@@@@@ @@@@@. Either way, the layered storytelling co-created by Long, onstage video artist and co-performer Cande Andrade and six offstage members of Rumble Productions is superb. The bunny suit always carries a sheen of sadness, and the nice-guy narrator—willing to help an old @@@@@@@ @@@ @ @@@ someone we trust. The unusual disempowerment of the photographs creates an open channel for us to linger in @@@@@@ @@@ emotional world, and he tells us about it so well.

ISTVAN KANTOR ... in a few words...

TRANSMISSION MACHINE is a distillation of themes Istvan has been exploring for years - the links between revolution; sexuality; & technology - the heightened energy of these states and the embodiment of how they physically affect the body.

Istvan's intense performance presence is unparalleled & in this solo work he is able to retain a relentless force with his raw masculine energy. Istvan's assaulting rhythms grip the audience and act on their bodies, increasing their heartbeats & triggering the adrenaline rush of revolution, sex and technological overdrive.

WHAT IS YOUR RELEVANCE? is the question being asked at the CULTURE CONGRESS - March 7 to 10th

It is with great pleasure that Harbourfront Centre, in partnership with The Theatre Centre and Crow’s Theatre invite you to take part in the inaugural edition of The Culture Congress, an industry forum in Toronto bringing together practitioners from the local, national and international performance and cultural communities for an exchange of practical skills, information sharing and ideas.

Taking place this year from March 7-10th, as part of World Stage’s partnership with The Theatre Centre’s Free Fall 08 (www.harbourfrontcentre.com/worldstage/performances/freefall08/), a national festival of experimental interdisciplinary performance, The Culture Congress dares to ask ‘What is Your Relevance?’

Over the course of four days, participants of The Culture Congress will challenge themselves and each other through a series of workshops, discussions and performances as provocative questions are developed, raised and explored:

How is your work influenced by your locale? What is the relationship of performance to its local community? What is the artist’s obligation to be relevant? What role does the context play in creating relevance? What is the artist’s responsibility to his or her community? To truth? What are the priorities we put on art? Is populist or popular necessarily—or the antithesis to—relevant?

We are happy to announce registration to participate in The Culture Congress is FREE. Planned activities and events include a keynote address by Kristy Edmunds, Artistic Director of Melbourne International Arts Festival; Panel Discussions; Workshops and a Pitch Session. For more information, please contact hatch@harbourfrontcentre.com.

Watch The Theatre Centre website for a detailed schedule of Culture Congress events.
