TO HELL WITH CONVENTION! IT’S TIME TO PUT THE ID BACK IN VIDEO! An exploration into modifying everyday objects into production tools.
Some call it Frankentek..... Think outside the box, let your imagination be a part of the production process as well as the story. In this workshop we are going to slip the surly bonds of the everyday and explore the possibilities of using divergent technologies in the creation of media art. In previous workshops, we have created strange sound devices by putting 5 marbles in a metal bowl, swishing them around to create odd audio, we have taken apart cheap microphones to create contact mics for scratching and recording bodily sounds. We will be doing more extreme makeovers this time. If you have anything at home that you wouldn’t mind donating to the workshop, that is very welcomed. The purpose of this workshop is to change the way people look at everyday objects, and then by extension, how they look at the way media art is created. Einstien said "Imagination is more important than knowledge". Let your imagination soar and escape the bonds of normalcy.
The focus of this workshop is to interest artists in going beyond technological borders and to think outside of the box. PARTICIPANTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO BRING THINGS FROM HOME THAT WE MAY BE ABLE TO CONVERT.

CHRC: Film and Television Training Data Base
Film and Television Training Data Base
OTTAWA, February 22, 2007 - The Cultural Human Resources Council (CHRC) is pleased to announce the launch of its new Film and Television Training Data Base. This unique resource allows film and television professionals (including directors, producers, actors, musicians, writers, composers and technical workers), and those preparing to enter the industry, to easily identify training opportunities. For several years, the film and television industry has called for this national training data base. They recognize its key role in "harmonizing training", as both a practical tool to assist access to training, and a policy tool to identify training gaps and advance solutions. The TDB was funded by Human Resources and Social Development Canada, and the Department of Canadian Heritage. A Steering Committee of professionals representing training providers including Institut nationale de l'image et du son (INIS), the Canadian Film and Television Production Association (CFTPA), the Canada Film Centre (CFC), the National Screen Institute (NSI), the Canadian Screen Training Centre (CSTC), and Women in Film and Television (WIFT), and funders including the Department of Canadian Heritage and Telefilm, oversaw the development of the TDB. M3K Solutions (Amadeus), in collaboration with ArtExpert.ca, were responsible for building and populating the TDB. Users may search by training provider, area of training (i.e. writing and research, directing, producing, technical crew, post-production, new media and acting), and type of training (full-time, professional development, workshops, on-the-job, mentoring, seminars/master classes, e-learning). Information contained in the TDB is maintained by the training providers themselves, therefore will be up to date and accurate. The current listing of training providers includes professional associations, industry organizations and private institutions. A second phase is planned which will include the addition of universities and colleges that offer courses, degrees and diplomas in film and television related studies. The Cultural Human Resources Council (CHRC) strives to be at the centre of vision and forward thinking in the area of cultural human resources development. CHRC brings together representatives of arts disciplines and cultural industries in the cultural sector to address the training and career development needs of cultural workers - artists, creators, technical staff, managers and all others engaged professionally in the sector, including the self-employed. To become a member of CHRC please visit our website. Media interested in setting up an interview with CHRC representatives should contact Megan Guy (613-562-1535 x 31; mguy@culturalhrc.ca).

iStockphoto: Contest
Hi EMMEDIA producers,
Right now there is a video contest going on that could land you an awesome prize. iStockphoto, by far the hottest marketplace for independently produced stock footage is giving away a couple of loaded Panasonic HVX 200 HD camcorders, a couple of Sony camcorders and more, totally over $26,000 US. The videos they are looking for may very well be the kind of thing many of you would be interested in producing anyway, so hey! Here's a link to the contest page:
http://www.istockphoto.com/article_view.php?ID=254
As many of you know, I am the Video Content Manager at iStock, which is located right here in Calgary. When I started with iStockphoto last summer, we had not yet begun to build the video collection. Today there are around 18,000 clips online. Not a lot of EMMEDIA members are contributing to the collection yet, but those who have are selling them. If you have footage sitting around the studio that you think might sell as stock drop me a line, vcr@istockphoto.com.

Movies That Matter Screening: Purvis of Overtown
Movies That Matter screening Purvis of OvertownThe true colour of an artist’s life
What: Purvis of Overtown Directed by Shaun Conrad & David Raccuglia Canadian Premiere! When: Monday, March 26, 2007 – 7:00PM Where: EPCOR CENTRE’s Engineered Air Theatre (in the 200 block on the north side of 9 Ave. S.E) Tickets: $5 students/seniors/low income, $10 adults (Tickets at door only) Calgary Dollars Accepted
PRE-SCREENING SHORT: Outsider: The Life and Art of Judith Scott (Director Betsy Bayha) http://www.judithscottdocumentary.org/ Adult Content Advisory
From a dilapidated warehouse to the Smithsonian Museum of Art, this is the story of an artist’s life; an artist living in the darkness of ghetto poverty, but whose paintings have brought light back into a world of fallen dreams. "I paint from reality" says Purvis Young, an outsider artist and long term resident of the notorious Miami ghetto Overtown, now locally known as the "the town that God won’t interview." His paintings are raw, candid images of his world, made from scraps of plywood and leftover house paint and yet they hang in some of the most prestigious galleries and collectors’ homes, touching the lives of those who will never experience the reality of what he paints. This is the story of Purvis Young. Over Otis Taylor's powerful blues soundtrack, dealers, curators and collectors discuss Young's impact on the art world, while his neighbors share stories about the artist they have known for decades as a bicycle-riding beacon of hope. As one old-timer puts it, "Purvis is Overtown."
